              Dr. Mikao Usui

Where did Reiki come from?

A Japanese Tendai Buddhist named Mikao Usui claimed to have discovered Reiki after long meditation, fasting, and prayer. Usui wrote that by mystical revelation he had gained the knowledge and spiritual power to apply and attune others to what is called Reiki. Mikao Usui said that he had the ability to enable people to enhance their access to the energy through certain initiations called Reiji-ho. Attunements to Reiki enhanced and refined a person's pre-existing ability to connect with Reiki. Through such initiations, students are said to become clearer channels for Reiki and thereby improve the quality of treatments that student (or practitioner) provides. From Wikipedia

The name Reiki derives from the Japanese pronunciation of two Chinese characters that are said to describe the energy itself: '? rei' (meaning 'spirit', 'soul' or 'ghost') and ? ki (Chinese qi, here meaning 'energy' or 'life force'). In English, the Japanese noun Reiki is used as a verb and adjective. Japanese speakers also use the term as a generic "ghostly power" while the Usui Method of Reiki Healing is specifically Usui reiki shiki ryoho.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning "universal life energy" and is a Japanese technique for the reduction of stress and promotes relaxation that can help begin the healing process of the body, mind and spirit. This life force energy can be defined as energy in all created matter. "Ki" is similar in thought to "chi" or "qi" in Chinese medicine, Hindu "prana" and Christian "light." Reiki is hands-on energy healing where the practitioner serves as an open channel for transmitting the "Ki" to others. The energy is channeled through the hands to the client, which activates the body's own natural ability to heal itself.

Reiki goes to wherever it is needed most, releasing blocked energies, cleansing the body of toxins, working to create a state of balance and harmony, and promoting relaxation and healing. In its long history Reiki has been used for virtually every known illness and injury from minor to serious problems.

This technique has been practiced for thousands of years that dates back to Biblical times and the earliest known written records of Sanskrit. Reiki is not a religion but spiritual in nature. It is not dependent on belief and will work with your higher self, knowing what the body, mind and spirit needs and can be defined as Spiritually Guided Life Energy.

Reiki is a special kind of healing energy that can only be channeled by someone that has been attuned to it. It is Universal Life Energy that is guided by the Highest Power of Spiritual Consciousness and is both powerful and gentle. Since Reiki is guided by the Highest Spiritual Consciousness, it can never do harm and always knows what a person needs and will adjust itself accordingly to each individual. Reiki is both powerful and gentle.

What can Reiki treat?

Reiki works in harmony and improves the effectiveness of all other types of therapies and treatments. In its long history, Reiki has been used for virtually every known illness and injury from minor to serious problems and is a safe complement to Western Medicine, Chinese Medicine, Homeopathy, Flower Essences and all other forms of allopathic and holistic healing. It has also been shown that Reiki can reduce the side effects of chemotherapy.

Reiki can provide accelerated healing from trauma, injuries and surgery. It serves for emotional healing, prevention of illness and behavior issues. Reiki, along with Therapeutic Touch have been used extensively with patients in Hospice easing the transition to death.

Reiki is a particularly gentle technique because it is non-invasive and non-manipulative. Treatments can be used to facilitate physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. Treatments can be done on oneself, others, animals, plants, etc. Reiki treatments can be used for nearly all conditions, with little or no side effects.

You can and should continue to receive regular medical or psychological treatments while receiving Reiki treatments.

What will happen during my Reiki session?

The process of hand positions and treatment will be explained and any questions or concerns addressed before your session begins.

You will lie on a massage table or sit in a comfortable chair while fully clothed. It is suggested that loose fitting clothes be worn for the session for the extended comfort of the client. If desired, a pillow may be placed under your head or knees.

You will be able to release from your mind all thoughts and fears. Let go, relax as soothing music is played for your enjoyment and relaxation.

Your Practitioner, while moving around you, will use various hand positions on or near your body to assess your energy strengths or weaknesses.

The energy of Reiki is then channeled (sent) to these areas of weakness and then onto your entire body, releasing blocked energy. You may experience warmth, tingling or buzzing. You may fall asleep as you begin to relax and unwind.

Upon completion of your session, you will discuss your healing and course of further
treatment if needed with your practitioner.
(some clients may experience light-headedness, sinus drainage, increased gastrointestinal activity, etc.)

Therapeutic Touch

Therapeutic Touch is a contemporary healing modality drawn from ancient practices and developed by Dora Kunz and Dolores Krieger. The practice is based on the assumptions that human beings are complex fields of energy and that the ability to enhance healing in another is a natural potential.

Therapeutic Touch (TT) is used to balance and promote the flow of human energy. It is taught in colleges around the world and has a substantial base of formal and clinical research. This research has shown that TT is useful in reducing pain, improving wound healing, aiding relaxation, and easing the dying process. TT can be learned by anyone with a sincere interest and motivation towards helping others.

Therapeutic Touch is a simple technique that utilizes the hands to focus the transfer of universal energy toward the direction of health. Therapeutic Touch is sometimes called “T Touch”. This technique is spiritual in nature and has been practiced for thousands of years that dates back to Biblical times that anyone can learn and apply.

This technique is done by “smoothing” the energy field that surrounds the body and  establishing a balance within the energy system which promotes relaxation and healing within the body. Universal Energy is then directed to the areas of need.

What can Therapeutic Touch treat?

Therapeutic Touch is very much like Reiki since it is a particularly gentle technique because it is non-invasive and non-manipulative. Treatments can be used to facilitate physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. Treatments can be done on oneself, others, animals, plants, etc. T-Touch treatments can be used for nearly all conditions, with little or no side effects, just like Reiki.

Reiki and Therapeutic Touch can reduce the side effects of Chemotherapy, enhance the effects of Flower Essences and support Acupuncture treatments. Both modalities can ease the transition to death and is an excellent complement when used in the Hospice program.

Distant Healing

Distant Healing Reiki has the same benefits as hands on Reiki but is done from a distance. The benefits are Physical, Emotional and Spiritual healing. Results can usually be seen within 24-48 hours. Distant healing is usually done by the practitioner going into meditation and channeling the Reiki energy to the client. Reiki energy can be directed anywhere in the universe.

Distant healing can arranged by phone or email. Some people prefer one on one distant healing and most practitioners charge for this since it is up front and personal. If you go to the Favorite links page, you will find a link for the Distant Healing Network where all healing requests are free.

Life Energy (Chi or Prana)

All living things have a life force energy or Ki (Chi or Prana) flowing through us. The Energy of Reiki and Therapeutic Touch work with that energy. Blocked Chi or Prana means an unhealthy body, mind, emotional or spiritual state. Once the flow of energy is restored to the area of need, healing can begin to take place within the body.

Alternative Therapies

Alternative Therapies have gained acceptance worldwide as meaningful ways to improve patient care. They reduce stress and promote relaxation, thereby enhancing the body’s natural response and ability to heal itself, thus speeding recovery time. Many hospitals and clinics across the globe now offer Reiki and “T Touch” to enhance the recovery of their patients. Those in Hospice are helped with pain and transition.

Many colleges now offer Reiki and Therapeutic Touch classes with Massage Therapy and Nursing curriculums. While these treatments can and often are used in conjunction with other conventional medical treatments or procedures, they are not in any way intended to replace traditional methods.
